Whatever the Weather Family Storytime

Lately, the days have been wet and dreary here on the Wet Coast.  Uh, Westcoast. I hope the stories and songs in today’s weather themed storytime helped make yet another gray day a little more fun.  Truthfully, I just wanted to sing “Mr. Sun.” It’s okay to build an entire storytime around a favorite song, right?

Cats and Dogs Family Storytime

As I mentioned in my Gone to the Dogs Babytime post, I have a fabulous new sheepdog puppet.  If I could work out a storytime theme that would allow me to use him every week I’d do it.  Here’s the one that he inspired this week.  It’s a bit of a build-on from the dog-themed babytime, with books and songs, etc. that appeal to our older Family Storytime crowd.

Bread and butter, marmalade and jam, [slap hands on knees to the beat]
Can you say hello as slowly as you can?
Hello [very slow]

We repeated this with slowly, quickly, high, low, and ended with loud and quiet.

Action Song — My Dog Rags from Sharon, Lois, and Bram

I have a dog.
His name is Rags.
He eats so much that his tummy sags,
His ears flip flop and his tail wig wags.
And when he walks, he goes zig zag.

He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
I love Rags and he loves me.

My dog Rags, he loves to play.
He rolls around in the mud all day.
I whistle. [whistle]
He won’t obey.
He always runs the other way.

He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
I love Rags and he loves me.

You can get the tune and watch Sharon, Lois and Bram’s the actions for this fun song in this YouTube video.

I couldn’t find a cat or dog stamp in the 2 minutes I had before storytime. Please don’t judge me.

Gone to the Dogs Babytime

One of the perils of my line of work is the potential to spend entire paychecks on puppets.  Luckily, the Folkmanis sheepdog I got the other day was a gift.  He’s so darn cute that I couldn’t resist basing a storytime around him. (And, yes, I currently use themes in my babytimes. I find the wealth of songs, fingerplays, bounces, etc. overwhelming without a theme to zero in on.  I do repeats week to week and anticipate I’ll move to themeless babytimes once I have a wider repetoire memorized and once I’ve gained a bit more confidence.)
